VCS – Service to God and Neighbor

Our St. George church school was delighted to join The Presentation of Christ Greek Orthodox and St. John the Baptist Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Churches for their Vacation Church Program.  The theme was “God’s Big Backyard:  Service to God and Neighbor.”  Each day started with a prayer, bible story and skit.  The students then had some class time followed by a craft and snack, and they learned a new hymn each day related to the theme of the day.  Officer Brian George Armstrong joined us one day, along with his service dog Lokie, and talked about how he serves our community.  Additionally, Nicholas Chakos from the International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) talked to the children about how IOCC offers emergency relief and development programs to those in need worldwide.  The students then filled backpacks with school supplies.  IOCC has a goal to send 10,000 backpacks to impoverished children throughout the world.  On the last day, the children made bagged lunches for the homeless, and enjoyed some fellowship at a picnic and pool party hosted by a gracious parishioner.

The East Pittsburgh Orthodox Vacation Church School Program is held the second week of August each year.  We are thankful to the East Pittsburgh churches for including us in this benefical and enjoyable program.
